In the 19th century, officers' quarters were always grouped in the same area on military posts, and were known collectively as Officers' Row. At Fort Selden, these quarters were opposite the enlisted barracks on the other side of the parade ground. Thus, the main post buildings surrounded the parade ground.
Fort Selden in the late 1880's. This is the original administration structure. Note the two-story portion. This housed the jail. It had a stone foundation that is still prominent among the remains.

The fort in the 21st century. This view is from behind the headquarters complex shown at left. The green arrow points out the stone foundation where the tall building once stood.
This shows the general layout of the fort when it was active, but does not show all the structures that existed in the late 1800s. The green arrow shows where the Friends of Fort Selden encampment takes place monthly.
